Mana in MTG
The resource players spend to cast spells and pay costs.
Why it matters
Mana is produced by lands and other abilities, then held temporarily in a player's mana pool. Unspent mana empties as steps and phases end.
Visual example
Tap to produce mana
- 1You receive priority with Llanowar Elves untapped.
- 2Activate its mana ability by tapping it.
- 3Add one green mana to your mana pool and spend it on a cost.
Real card example

Taps to add one green mana
Common mistakes
- Lands are not mana; lands usually have abilities that produce mana.
- Mana normally does not remain available through later steps or phases.
