Game BasicsBeginner
Player in MTG
A person taking part in the game who makes choices and can win or lose.
Why it matters
Each player has their own life total, library, hand, and graveyard. Players take turns, receive priority, control objects, and make every choice required for themselves unless a rule or effect says otherwise.
Visual example
Affect a player
- 1Two players begin the game with separate life totals and cards.
- 2The active player casts Lightning Bolt targeting the opponent.
- 3The opponent loses three life when the spell resolves.
Real card example
Lightning Bolt
Shows that a spell can deal damage directly to a player
Common mistakes
- A player is not a permanent and cannot be destroyed or exiled.
- The active player is simply the player whose turn it is.
