Reach in MTG

This creature can block creatures with flying.

Why it matters

Reach changes the flying restriction during blocker declaration. It does not give the creature flying and does not affect how that creature attacks.

Visual example

Block a flying creature

Attacker
Giant Spider

A reach creature that can block a flyer

Combat
Defender
Serra Angel

An attacking creature with flying

  1. 1Serra Angel attacks with flying.
  2. 2Giant Spider is declared as its blocker.
  3. 3Reach makes that block legal even though the Spider does not fly.

Real card example

Common mistakes

  • Reach is not flying.
  • Reach does not allow a creature to block an otherwise unblockable attacker.
