Untap in MTG

Return a tapped permanent to its upright, ready position.

Why it matters

The active player normally untaps all their permanents during the untap step. No player receives priority during that step, though spells and abilities can untap permanents at other times.

Ready a tapped card
  1. 1A land begins the turn tapped.
  2. 2During the untap step, turn it upright with your other permanents.
  3. 3It is now ready to attack or pay a tap cost when legal.

Common mistakes

  • Untapping is not the same as removing summoning sickness.
  • An already untapped permanent cannot be untapped again to trigger an event.
