CombatBeginner

Block in MTG

To assign an untapped creature to stop an attacking creature during combat.

Why it matters

The defending player declares blockers after attackers are declared. A blocker does not tap, and each blocker normally blocks one attacking creature.

Visual example

Assign a legal blocker

Attacker
Giant Spider

Can block creatures with flying because it has reach

Combat
Defender
Serra Angel

The attacking creature with flying

  1. 1Serra Angel attacks with flying.
  2. 2Giant Spider may block it because the Spider has reach.
  3. 3The creatures deal combat damage to each other.

Real card example

Giant Spider

Can block creatures with flying because it has reach

Common mistakes

  • Blocking does not tap the blocking creature.
  • You cannot normally block a creature attacking another player.
