Game BasicsBeginner
Phase in MTG
A major section of a turn, such as a main phase or combat phase.
Why it matters
Every normal turn has five phases. Some phases contain multiple steps, while each main phase has no steps. Players receive priority during most phases after required turn-based actions are handled.
Visual example
Advance between phases
- 1The beginning phase prepares the active player.
- 2The first main phase allows normal development before combat.
- 3Combat, the second main phase, and the ending phase follow in order.
Real card example
Relentless Assault
Adds another combat phase and main phase
Common mistakes
- A phase is not the same as a step.
- Players do not automatically receive priority during the untap step.
