Step in MTG

A smaller ordered part of a phase, such as the draw step or declare blockers step.

Why it matters

Steps divide the beginning, combat, and ending phases into precise moments. Turn-based actions happen at the start of certain steps before players receive priority.

Visual example

Handle a step

Braids, Cabal Minion

Demonstrates an ability that triggers at the beginning of a specific step

Handle a step
  1. 1The turn enters the upkeep step.
  2. 2Beginning-of-upkeep abilities trigger before a player receives priority.
  3. 3After all players pass, the game advances to the draw step.

Real card example

Common mistakes

  • Steps cannot be entered in an arbitrary order.
  • A beginning-of-step trigger cannot trigger later in that same step if its moment was missed.
