Prowess in MTG

Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, this creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.

Why it matters

Prowess is a triggered ability. It triggers when the spell is cast, goes on the stack above that spell, and can resolve even if the original spell is countered.

Visual example

Trigger a temporary bonus

Monastery Swiftspear

Gets +1/+1 when its controller casts a noncreature spell

Lightning Bolt

A noncreature spell that triggers prowess

  1. 1Cast Lightning Bolt while controlling Monastery Swiftspear.
  2. 2Prowess triggers and goes above the Bolt on the stack.
  3. 3The trigger resolves, giving the Swiftspear +1/+1 until end of turn.
