Ward in MTG

An opponent's spell or ability targeting this permanent is countered unless they pay the ward cost.

Why it matters

Ward triggers after an opponent targets the permanent. Unlike hexproof, it does not prevent targeting; it creates a payment choice when the trigger resolves.

Visual example

Pay the ward cost

Top of stackResolves first
Adrix and Nev, Twincasters

Has ward 2, requiring an opponent to pay two mana

Lightning Bolt

Targets the ward permanent and causes ward to trigger

Objects leave from the top, one at a time
  1. 1An opponent casts Lightning Bolt targeting Adrix and Nev.
  2. 2Ward triggers and is placed above Lightning Bolt on the stack.
  3. 3Unless that opponent pays two mana, the ward trigger counters the Bolt.

Real card example

Adrix and Nev, Twincasters

Has ward 2, requiring an opponent to pay two mana

Common mistakes

  • Ward does not stop a spell from being cast.
  • Paying the ward cost does not pay for or copy the original spell.
